Spring Break in Cuba

19 Feb

I never thought that a Fidel Castro-less Cuba would be the result of retirement, but such is the case.

The 81-year-old dictator has been out of the spotlight for the past couple years. Due in no small part to his failing health. CNN has a lengthy piece about Castro, his path to becoming a dictator and excerpts of Castro’s resignation letter published just today in a Cuban newspaper.

I’m sure CNN has been holding on to this piece for quite some time, thinking they’d break it out whenever Castro died. Well, it’s getting some shine earlier than expected.Castro’s brother Raul has already been named his successor, but there will be an “election” in a few days anyway.

The U.S. has had an embargo on all things Cuban for a while and so far, there’s no word on when or if that embargo will be lifted. If it is lifted, there’ll be a new non-Cancun spot for spring breakers. Co-eds rejoice.
